Bisco Smith is the Master of the Pivot and the Pen | ARTdustry Podcast: Season 4 EP. 3
The hosts of ARTdustry, Substantial "Stan" Robinson and Rachelle Etienne-Robinson, connect with Bisco Smith to discuss the many stages of his journey as a contemporary artist; we’re talking before the internet, before social media, and even before the pandemic. Hit that play button to hear more about the inspiration behind Smith’s art and music, the business behind his profits thus far, and how hip-hop has permeated every area of his life.
Bisco Smith is an American contemporary artist, recognized for his graffiti-deconstructive approach to abstract expressionism. He strips his compositions to their fundamental essence of motion and rhythm while channeling the energy of a moment through gestural marks and abstracted, lyrical text. Smith continues to use words as the foundation of his expression, whether on a canvas, building, or paper.
Smith utilizes his understanding of space and songwriting from his early years as a graffiti writer, music maker, and graphic designer to create his highly sought-after pieces.
His art is unique, not because of his approach but also the meaning behind the pieces, from the words to the structure. He aims to create art that inspires hope for the future.
Smith’s energetic creativity over the past decade has landed him solo and group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Miami, Berlin, Seattle, and Hong Kong. He has partnered with well-known brands: Nike, RED, MCM, Coach, Adidas, SLS hotels, and Hypebeast.
Smith currently resides in New York and continues to expand on his love of hip-hop through art and family.
