After School in the City | Exploring DC’s After School Programs

Our very own Director of Projects and Events, Ron Brown (aka DJ RBI), was recently featured on FOX 5 DC to promote WBLs after school programs as part DC’s continued support for afterschool programs in the area.

The segment centered around the "After School in the City" event, an initiative that connects DC families with a variety of enriching afterschool opportunities—including our programs at WBL. Organized by the DC Deputy Mayor for Education’s office, the "After School in the City" event is a free, city-wide platform for families to learn about the many options available for their kids. Thanks to over $25 million in funding from Mayor Bowser, more than 120 organizations across the city can provide high-quality, accessible programs for DC youth.

At WBL, we’re proud to offer free classes that explore the hip-hop arts, including DJing, music production, MCing, and much more. These programs give young people the opportunity to dive into creative fields that could inspire future careers. DJ RBI highlighted that DJing has the potential to be a rewarding career path, encouraging young people to explore these opportunities.

Also featured in the segment was Common Good City Farm, whose LEAF (Learning for Environment, Agriculture, and Food) program introduces kids to farming, cooking, and sustainability. Participants get hands-on experience learning how to grow food, cook meals, and take care of the environment. Another incredible partner featured in the segment is the Open Goal Project, which provides free soccer coaching and league participation to marginalized communities in DC. Amir Lowry, their executive director, spoke about the program’s mission to make soccer accessible to everyone.
